What is IAM?

Identity and Access Management (IAM) is a framework that ensures the right people (or even devices and software!) have access to the resources they need, while keeping everything else locked down. 

Imagine a large library with subjects on different floors - IAM acts like a librarian who checks your ID card in person against your drivers license and your library password as you enter the library (authentication) and there's a security door before you enter each section which verifies you're authorised before you can enter each section such as (sports and literature, not history and science).
